© CINAR Animation
Second draft (7 minutes): September 26th, 1999
FADE IN:
INT. CAILLOU'S BEDROOM DAY
* CAILLOU is marching up and down his room, SFX:BEATING a toy drum with relish. He stops.
1. STORYTELLER
* Caillou had been playing all
morning in his room, and that made
him very thirsty. He thought about
getting some water, then he decided
that he'd like apple juice better.
Caillou leaves his toy drum on the bed and leaves.
* INT. BATHROOM DAY
* Caillou stands in the doorway. The bathroom is empty, save for a rubber duck on the floor.
2. CAILLOU
Mommy?
* Caillou leaves.
* INT. PARENTS' BEDROOM DAY
* Caillou peers inside the empty room.
3. CAILLOU * Mommy, are you there?
INT. KITCHEN DAY
* Caillou comes in. The kitchen is empty.
4. CAILLOU * Where are you, mommy?
5. STORYTELER
* Caillou couldn't find mommy. The
house was so quiet. It was just
like playing a game of hide-and-
seek!
Caillou smiles and runs out of the room.
INT. LIVING ROOM DAY
MOM is sitting in a chair in a corner, under a lamp, reading a book. Caillou comes in and sees her. He tip-toes and pounces into her lap.
6. MOMMY
Oof!
Mom is visibly startled and almost drops her book.
7. CAILLOU
(laughing)
* You're it mommy! You were hiding,
and I found you!
8. MOM * You sure did, honey.
Caillou settles into her lap.
9. CAILLOU * What are you reading?
10. MOM * It's a very good book.
ANGLE ON the page covered with indecipherable characters.
11. STORYTELLER
* Caillou couldn't make any of the
letters out. He thought maybe he
would like it too.
12. CAILLOU * Can you read to me?
13. MOM
* Well, there's only one page left.
But I have an idea: why don't you
look at your own books, and then we
can tell each other about them!
Caillou climbs down and opens his picture book on the coffee table. ANGLE ON the scuffed page and the faded images.
14. STORYTELLER
* Caillou liked his books, but they
were used up. Some of them had even
been in the tub, and he could
hardly make out the pictures
anymore.
Caillou walks up to Mom and tugs on her pant leg.
15. CAILLOU * Can we play now mommy? Mommy?
Mom remains absorbed until she puts her book down with a smile.
16. MOM
There, all done. (beat) What's the
matter Caillou, don't you like your
books?
17. CAILLOU * This one is too old.
18. MOM
* Well, I know a place where we can
find all sorts of new exciting
books. It's called a library. It's
where I got this book.
19. CAILLOU * Did they give it to you?
20. MOM
* No, I only borrowed it and now I
have to return it. Would you like
to come with me?
21. CAILLOU * Yes! I want to go!
INT. LIBRARY DAY
* Mom walks, followed by Caillou. There is a large globe on a pedastal next to the main desk. Caillou rushes to it and tries to wrap his small arms around it.
22. CAILLOU
(loudly)
* Mommy, I know what that is! It's
the earth! Clementine has a small
one in her room.
23. MOM
* We have to be quiet in the library,
Caillou. We don't want to disturb
people who are reading.
Mom hands her book to the librarian behind the counter.
24. CAILLOU
Mommy, why did she take your book?
25. MOM
* It's because I promised that I'd
return it as soon as I was finished
with it. That way, I can borrow
more of them.
Caillou points to a book on the counter.
26. CAILLOU
Can I see this one?
27. MOM
* I think this is a grown-up's book.
It's much too heavy for a little
boy like you.
* Caillou tugs on Mom's shirt. She leans closer.
28. CAILLOU
(discreetely)
* Can you ask the lady if they have
books for me?
29. MOM
* Of course they do. In fact, I know
just where they keep them.
* Mom takes Caillou by the hand and leads him through another door.
INT. CHILDREN'S LIBRARY DAY
Mom and Caillou step through into the children's library. It has colourful tables and chairs, and drawings on the walls.
30. MOM
* You see Caillou, they have a
section just for children.
31. CAILLOU
* Wow! Look at all the pretty books,
mommy!
Caillou admires books laid out on the tables. CLEMENTINE'S MOM walks up to them.
32. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
Hello Caillou! What a nice
surprise!
33. CAILLOU
Are these your books?
34. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
* Oh no Caillou, I only volunteer to
help out around here. In fact,
we're getting ready for story time.
Would you like to sit with us?
35. CAILLOU * Can I mommy, please?
36. MOM
That's a good idea, Caillou. In the
meantime, I'll go back to get some
books. I'll be back in just a few
minutes, okay?
* Mom walks away. Clementine's mom takes a few books from a table and shows them to Caillou.
37. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
* Would you like to help me choose
the story for today, Caillou?
* Caillou points to a book with a clownish bear on the cover.
38. CAILLOU * Can we read this one?
39. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
* Baxter the Bashful Bear. That's an
excellent choice!
* Caillou joins Emma, Wendy, Jason and Jeffrey in a semi-circle around Clementine's mom, who reads from the book. SUCCESSIVE SHOTS of Clementine's mom; the faces of the children; Caillou's wide grin.
40. STORYTELLER
* Clementine's mom read a story about
Baxter, then another, and another!
They were all new to Caillou, and
he thought they were wonderful.
41. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
* ...and on that day, Baxter the
Bashful Bear made a new friend. The
end.
42. CAILLOU
Yay!
* Mom walks in carrying a few books as the children scatter.
43. MOM
* I see that story time was a
success.
44. CAILLOU * Baxter is very funny, mommy!
45. MOM
I want you to tell me all about him
on our way home.
46. CAILLOU
I don't want to go! I want to stay
and look at the books!
* Clementine's mom hands him two books.
47. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
Why don't you take these home,
Caillou? And when you bring them
back, I'll read you another story
with different characters.
Caillou takes the books.
48. CAILLOU
Can I really?
49. MOM
* Of course! Come with me, and I'll
make you a library card.
INT CAILLOU'S LIVING ROOM DAY
DAD is reading the newspaper. Caillou storms in.
50. CAILLOU
Daddy, look, I went to the library
with mommy and they let me borrow
some books!
* Dad takes Caillou's book and the library card inside.
51. DAD
* And you have your own library card,
too! This is very exciting,
Caillou.
52. CAILLOU
* We had story time with Clementine's
mom and she read stories about
Baxter the Bashful Bear!
53. DAD
I'm sorry I missed all that.
Caillou climbs onto Dad's lap and opens his books.
54. CAILLOU
* It's okay, we can read them again.
I can show you all the pictures.
55. DAD
I think that's a great idea.
* INT. CAILLOU'S BEDROOM DAY
* Caillou is lying on his bed, reading to a gleeful Rosie and Gilbert.
56. STORYTELLER
* Over the next few days, Caillou
read his new books over and over
with mommy and daddy, and Rosie
too!
INT. CAILLOU'S BEDROOM DAY
* Caillou is lying flat on his stomach, colouring with his crayons.
57. STORYTELLER
* In fact, he had read them so often
that he forgot they were only
borrowed, until it was time to
return them to the library.
* Mom peeks in the doorway.
58. MOM
Caillou, would you like to come
with me to the library?
59. CAILLOU
Yay! The library!
Caillou jumps to his feet.
60. MOM
Don't forget to bring back the
books you borrowed last time.
* Mom leaves. Caillou lifts his drawing and sees the books underneath. ANGLE ON one cover, covered with crayon scribbles.
61. STORYTELLER
* Caillou had forgotten to be careful
and coloured on one of the books.
He hadn't meant to! He thought that
if they saw the mess he made, the
library would never let him borrow
books again!
INT. CHILDREN'S LIBRARY DAY
Mom and Caillou walk in through the door.
62. MOM
I'll meet you here right after
story time, Caillou.
63. CAILLOU
Okay, mommy.
Mom leaves. Caillou looks at his books and frowns, remembering his blunder. Clementine's mom arrives.
64. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
* Hello Caillou! I was hoping you'd
come back soon. Did you come to
return the Baxter books?
Caillou hugs the books against his chest protectively.
65. CAILLOU * Do I have to?
66. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
* You've had them for a long time.
Maybe there's another little boy
who would like to read them.
67. CAILLOU
Just for another day, please?
Clementine's mom takes a book from a nearby shelf.
68. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
* I'll tell you what: if you return
the Baxter books, you can borrow
this one about the Ten Little
Piglets. We'll be reading about
them at story time today.
* Caillou reluctantly makes the exchange. Clementine's mom notices his handiwork.
69. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
Is this your drawing, Caillou?
Caillou bursts into tears.
70. CAILLOU
(sniffling)
* I'm sorry! I tried to be careful,
honest!
71. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
Don't cry Caillou. There's no harm
done.
72. CAILLOU
(sniffling)
* You're not angry?
73. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
Goodness, no. These books can take
a little punishment. They clean
right up, look!
Caillou watches as Clementine's mom wipes the crayon scribbles away with a cloth. Caillou brigthens up.
74. CAILLOU
It's all gone!
75. CLEMENTINE'S MOM
That's right. I can tell you're
very good with crayons. Would you
like to draw something for me?
Clementine's mom hands Caillou paper and crayons.
76. CAILLOU * I'm going to draw Baxter the Bear!
INT. CHILDREN'S LIBRARY DAY
* Mom comes in with yet more books, just as the small group of children bursts in SFX:LAUGHTER. They get up and scatter. Caillou is holding a few books.
77. CAILLOU
Mommy, we read a story about the
Ten Little Piglets! They're even
funnier than Baxter!
78. MOM
I could hear that.
79. CAILLOU
* And I made a drawing of Baxter and
Clementine's mom put it up on the
wall!
* Caillou proudly points to his drawing hanging on the wall with the other children's artwork.
80. MOM
* That's gorgeous, Caillou. Let's
bring your books to the counter so
we can take them home.
* Mom and Caillou walk to the children's counter. Mom tries to take Caillou's books.
81. CAILLOU * No mommy, I know how this time!
* Caillou hands his books to Clementine's mom.
82. STORYTELLER
Caillou was glad to be able to take
home new books. This time he would
take extra care of them.
* Clementine's mom hands Caillou his books in a bag.
83. CLEMENTINE'S MOM * Goodbye Caillou, see you soon!
84. CAILLOU * Bye!
* Caillou waves as they leave.
